At the heart of the system is Sheppard’s Magnetic Torque Overlay (MTO) steering gear, operating in conjunction with approved forward‑looking collision mitigation cameras and the Active Steering electronic control unit (ECU). Working together, these components communicate steering-assistance needs, reduce the required steering effort, and support safety features such as Lane Keep Assist.

Sheppard Active Steering is built on the proven HD94 steering gear, engineered with a fast steering ratio to reduce handwheel turns—ideal for vehicles with long wheelbases. By integrating advanced magnetic torque overlay technology into the HD94, the system delivers powerful capability in a compact package that fits seamlessly into modern vehicle designs.

There’s no large electric motor, no additional weight, and no extra power draw—helping maintain fleet fuel efficiency. The system uses existing hydraulic steering power combined with magnetic torque overlay to actuate the steering gear, creating an elegant, space‑efficient solution that brings premium active steering features to market.

Sheppard Active Steering also works in harmony with industry-standard ADAS technologies capable of detecting lane markings and vehicle position to deliver superior active steering performance.
